Search Lavaca County Court Docket

A Lavaca County court docket search starts with the court that heard or scheduled the case. District, constitutional county, justice, municipal, specialty, appellate, and federal matters do not share one complete public index. Official docket PDFs can reveal settings, while a local clerk supplies filed documents and certified copies. The statewide portal adds another search layer when a court publishes its data there. Matching the case type and cause number to the right custodian is therefore the key step. The Lavaca County court docket records a case’s public events, but access to images and protected matters may differ.

Two Lavaca County Docket Clerks

Two clerks hold the records, and the split matters. District Clerk Lori A. Wenske keeps District Court records at 109 N. LaGrange Street in Hallettsville. County Clerk Barbara K. Steffek keeps constitutional County Court records at the Courthouse Annex, 412 N. Texana Street. Route your request to the right office. A probate copy request sent to the District Clerk, or a district felony request sent to the County Clerk, can slow a docket search down.

Clerks and court coordinators do different jobs. The clerk keeps the case record. The coordinator manages the judge's settings. So ask a coordinator about a disputed hearing date, and ask the clerk for the filed notice or a certified docket.

What a Court Docket Shows

A Lavaca County court docket names the case and logs its public steps. District criminal PDFs can show a cause number, charge, attorney-role marker, jail note, hearing date, and PT or JT shorthand. Civil non-jury PDFs carry a cause number, caption or case category, attorney field, motion type, filed stamp, judge, date, and session time. County Court Docket Call Listings can add file date, offense or probate type, bond or representative data, setting type, and earlier events.

Cause number
The court’s unique case identifier and safest search key.
Setting
A planned court event, not proof of its outcome.
Other Court Events
Earlier settings or history printed in the County Court report.
Filed document
The petition, motion, order, judgment, or other item behind a docket entry.
Certified copy
A clerk-authenticated copy used when formal proof is required.

A docket line is not the document itself. A calendar may show that a motion was set without giving you the motion image or the signed order.

Lavaca Docket PDF, Not Form

Do not expect a name box. Lavaca County publishes no single local trial-case search form. Its main public calendar channel is a set of dated PDFs. That surprises people who want an instant register. A PDF works well when you know the court and the date. But it may cover only one docket call. Cases set on another day can be missing. Documents filed after the report was made can be missing too. The official Lavaca County home page leads to those court and clerk pages.

Lavaca County court docket official county home page

The county landing page is the government source, so follow its court links and check the date printed on any PDF before you rely on it. Treat the statewide system as a second layer, not a promise of full local coverage. If both routes come up empty, the clerk's phone, counter, written request, and older-record search still work.

Which Courts Keep Dockets

Two judicial district courts serve the county. They are the 25th Judicial District Court and the Second 25th Judicial District Court. The constitutional Lavaca County Court handles county-level matters. Four justice courts split limited civil and fine-only criminal work by precinct. Four municipal courts take city ordinances and Class C cases. The Centex Child Protection Court South offers its own public date selector for Lavaca hearings.

Appeals add another layer. State appeals from Lavaca County go to the Thirteenth Court of Appeals and can be searched through TAMES. Federal matters belong to the Southern District of Texas and PACER, not to a county clerk docket.

Start With the Named Court

A street address or city name will not identify the court. Hallettsville alone holds five of them. The list includes the District Clerk, County Court, County Clerk Annex, JP1, and a municipal court. Shiner has both Municipal Court and JP3. Yoakum has Municipal Court and JP4. That city spans Lavaca and DeWitt counties. Moulton has Municipal Court and JP2. The county page has carried a temporary JP2 closure notice, though.

Fastest route: Read the court title before searching. A ticket naming a city court does not belong to the county JP portal, even when both offices share the same town.

For a civil case, use the caption and cause number to route it. A city name in a caption may point to a party, a property, or an event location. It may not indicate the tribunal itself. Just got a traffic citation? Some JP nCourt portals advise allowing about five days for processing. A blank result in that window does not move the case to another court.

Finding Court Dates and Settings

Read the most recent notice first. Then compare it with the dated Lavaca County court docket PDF. Where available, check the Hearings view in re:SearchTX too. District criminal calendars may use PT for pretrial and JT for jury trial. County Court reports spell out labels like arraignment, non-jury, revocation hearing, pretrial hearing, jury trial, or probate hearing. Treat older entries under Other Court Events as history, not as your next appearance.

District Court settings can be confirmed with the right coordinator. Call the 25th coordinator at 830-303-4188. The Second 25th coordinator sits at 830-303-9705. That office prefers emailed setting requests. The County Court coordinator is at 361-798-2301. Municipal and JP dates must be confirmed with their own clerks. The detailed Lavaca County court calendar explains resets, appearance methods, and missed settings.

Note: A filed request for a continuance does not change a court date. The date changes only if the court grants it.

Four Lavaca Docket Date Checks

Any Lavaca County court date deserves a few separate checks. Start with the last written notice. Then try the newest county PDF, the electronic hearing result, and a call to the clerk. Each one tells you something a little different. A notice can predate a reset. A PDF may lag behind a change made that morning. A statewide result only appears after local publication. A phone confirmation should be logged with the date and the name of the office you called.

Remote access needs its own confirmation. The district pages lean toward in-person hearings. Still, Zoom stays available for some scheduled or custody matters. Hallettsville has posted a dated municipal Zoom notice. Neither one promises that your particular case can be heard online, so ask about the exact case, the time, the location, and how to join.

If two sources disagree, ask the clerk for the newer written notice or reset order. That paper beats an old calendar every time.

Public Access to Dockets

Texas treats ordinary government records differently from records tied to a court's judicial work. The Texas Public Information Act covers many county records, but case records from judicial work come from the clerk or court itself. Lavaca County's own open-records instructions tell requesters to skip the general county PIA route for court files.

Key Rules:

Texas Rule of Judicial Administration 12 governs access to many judicial records and lists exemptions.

Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 76a addresses sealing court records in civil cases.

Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A supplies the expunction framework.

Some material never appears in a public docket at all. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, and protected family information may be missing, redacted, or restricted. Public access does not create a right to private data or every document image.

Lavaca Online Docket Limits

The County Clerk's Tyler-hosted "Records Public Access Web" is an official index. Its own disclaimer calls the index a guide rather than the official document. It also warns about spelling variations. Treat it as a starting point, not a complete trial-court register. re:SearchTX goes further, searching cases, filings, text, documents, and hearings for whatever a court publishes. Registration or an eFileTexas credential may be required. Role, case type, fees, or restrictions can limit document access.

Electronic filing does not make every image public. Lavaca County made criminal e-filing mandatory for District Court matters in 2020. The County Clerk also requires attorney e-filing for civil, probate, and criminal cases. That technology moves paper into the court; it does not move it out to you. Release still depends on the clerk's system, the rules, and the case. When an image is unavailable, find the filing date and title in the docket. Then request that document from the custodian.

The Clerk and Docket Records

District Court docket records sit with the Lavaca County District Clerk, 109 N. LaGrange, P.O. Box 306, Hallettsville, Texas 77964, phone 361-798-2351. County Court criminal, civil, probate, and guardianship files sit with the Lavaca County Clerk, 412 N. Texana, Hallettsville, Texas 77964, phone 361-798-3612. The County Clerk takes written copy requests by mail, fax, in person, or email at countyclerk@co.lavaca.tx.us.

A good request names the cause number, the party, the date, and the exact document, plus your preferred format and whether you want a plain or certified copy. Pay before issuance where the published request rules require it.

Lavaca Courthouse and Annex Split

Hallettsville splits its record-keeping between two public offices. The courthouse at 109 N. LaGrange houses the District Clerk and the district setting functions. The County Clerk works from the Courthouse Annex at 412 N. Texana. Jury notices may send summoned district jurors to the courthouse basement or the north entrance, but that access note has nothing to do with where a County Clerk record request belongs. The official courthouse and annex directory lists both locations and the department contacts for each.

Lavaca County court docket courthouse and annex contact directory

Check the directory before you drive over. Call first when a file is old, restricted, archived, or needed in certified form. The split is also why "go to the courthouse" is bad advice in Lavaca County. The court level and the custodian decide which counter gets your request.

Three Lavaca Docket Record Layers

Lavaca County docket research really involves three layers. A docket or calendar lists what was filed, set, or recorded. The filed document holds the actual pleading, order, citation, return, judgment, or exhibit. A certified copy adds the clerk's authentication. Each layer serves a different need, and one cannot stand in for the next. A free PDF may confirm a published setting. But it is not a signed order. A plain download may not satisfy an agency or another court that wants certification.

The published 2026 schedules charge $1 per paper page plus a $5 certification charge for County Clerk copies. The District Clerk lists $1 per page and $5 per certified document. Both offices add a $5 search when no cause number is supplied. That search fee only covers locating the record, not certifying it. Electronic rates vary by page count, so confirm the total before you send payment. Transcripts come from the court reporter, not the clerk. Exhibits, sealed pages, older paper files, and recordings may need special handling or judicial permission.

Lavaca County Clerk Access

The County Clerk page pulls together its public-access link, fee accordions, e-filing notice, and copy-request form. It gathers all of it in one place. It is the right office for a constitutional County Court file. It is the wrong one for a District Court felony or a city citation. Keep that boundary in mind. The same name can show up in more than one Lavaca County docket. The official County Clerk page lays out those access choices.

A docket entry online only takes you so far. For the actual County Court document, go through the Clerk's office. That is where a certified copy comes from too. Sending a written request? Include the cause number, whether the case is probate, civil, or criminal. The County Clerk form wants your contact details, a description of the record, the format you need, and payment. Turnaround times are not published, so plan for a wait rather than same-day service.

Court Dockets by City in Lavaca County

Four incorporated cities make up Lavaca County's municipal court infrastructure. Each city clerk holds the records for that city. Those cover ordinance cases, Class C misdemeanors, and municipal traffic matters. A city payment page can help you find or pay a citation. It is not a full case-history search, though. And a city case is not the same thing as a JP docket in the same town. The 2020 Census figures below size each city. They are population counts, not court caseloads.

Yoakum Court Docket

Population 5,908 · Municipal Court and JP4 are separate, and Yoakum spans two counties.

Hallettsville Court Docket

Population 2,731 · City Court at 101 N. Main is distinct from county offices.

Shiner Court Docket

Population 2,127 · Municipal Court and JP3 use different clerks and addresses.

Moulton Court Docket

Population 1,704 · The city publishes walk-in docket procedure; JP2 is separate.

Check the government and court name printed on every notice you receive. A municipal payment receipt proves one transaction; it is not the whole Lavaca County court docket or a complete set of city filings.

Map and Directions to the Lavaca County Courthouse

District Court felony, civil, family, and juvenile files are kept by the District Clerk inside the Lavaca County Courthouse, 109 N. LaGrange, in Hallettsville, the county seat. The Courthouse Annex housing the County Clerk sits separately at 412 N. Texana, so a District Court file request belongs at the courthouse counter, not the annex. Jury notices sometimes direct summoned district jurors to the courthouse's basement or north entrance, which is worth noting before a first visit.
