Searching Cases by Name
Texas gives no one-stop public search across all trial courts. Expect a Lavaca County name search to touch a few official channels. Felony, district civil, family, and juvenile files live with the District Clerk. Misdemeanor, civil, probate, and guardianship files in constitutional County Court belong to the County Clerk. Justice Court and Municipal Court each keep their own cases. Start with whatever court is named on your notice, pleading, or citation.
The statewide re:SearchTX portal may return cases, filings, text, and hearings. That works when the court publishes data and your role permits access. Type the name exactly as it appears in the caption. Then try spelling variations the system supports. Check the cause number, case style, court, and filing date before trusting a match. Compare each one against what you know.
- Identify the court from an existing case paper.
- Open its official local channel or re:SearchTX.
- Enter the last and first name, then narrow by court, type, date, or status.
- Open the closest match and compare identifying case fields.
- Contact the custodian when the result is absent or unclear.
Lavaca Has No Unified Search
A search that comes back empty does not prove a Lavaca County case is absent. The county posts docket PDFs for selected District Court criminal and civil settings, plus County Court criminal and probate docket calls. Remember that these are settings lists. They are not a full register of every event. re:SearchTX reaches only records from participating courts, and the County Clerk's Tyler service is mainly an index to public and real-property records. Each source answers a narrower question than the one you may be asking.
Best first move: use the court name and cause number. Ask the District Clerk or County Clerk to route an uncertain district or county matter.
Lavaca County District Clerk service is available at 109 N. LaGrange Street in Hallettsville and 361-798-2351. County Clerk service is at 412 N. Texana Street and 361-798-3612. The public may use the counter, phone, mail, written copy request, posted local docket, or statewide system as each task requires.
Searching by Case Number
A complete cause number is the strongest key for a Lavaca County case lookup. Local examples don't follow one universal form. A District Court civil number may look like 24-09-25554. County Court criminal dockets can show a zero-padded number like 00025839. Probate may carry P-11667. Keep the letters, hyphens, and leading zeroes when the system accepts them. Justice Court instructions note that a citation prefix can matter. They suggest retrying a number without its leading zero if the first attempt fails.
Don't read meaning into any segment without a clerk-confirmed code list. These forms are observed docket examples, not a published Lavaca County numbering manual. Appeals get their own identifiers. Use the Texas appellate case search for a case that has reached the Thirteenth Court of Appeals.
Search re:SearchTX Four Ways
The official quick-reference material splits re:SearchTX into four modes. Cases suits a known style or cause number. Filings targets docketed submissions. Text digs into available document text. Hearings helps locate settings. Registered users may also see filters, Case Details, exports, and saved searches. Access still depends on the court, case type, document, and your role.
| View | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Cases | Known cause or caption | Published court data only |
| Filings | Listed filing events | An image may remain unavailable |
| Text | Available document words | Restricted documents stay hidden |
| Hearings | Cross-check a date | The court confirms changes |
The official eFileTexas entry page shows the connected filing and record systems.

The distinction matters. eFileTexas receives electronic filings, while re:SearchTX supplies role-based record access. Filing electronically does not make every image public.
What a Case Search Returns
A Lavaca County result can identify a cause number, style, court, case type, filing date, status, parties, counsel, and docket events. Local calendar PDFs add setting fields. The criminal sample shows charge, attorney role, jail status, and pretrial or jury labels. County Court listings include offense, file date, bond details, current setting, and earlier court events. Those details can confirm a match. Still, a docket is not the complete file.
| Cause number | The court identifier, such as 24-09-25554. |
|---|---|
| Case style | The caption used by the court. |
| Case type | Criminal, civil, family, probate, or another category. |
| Filed date | When the clerk indexed the case. |
| Setting | A hearing or trial event, not necessarily an outcome. |
| Status | The court-maintained case state read with its entries. |
Want the motion, order, judgment, or exhibit behind an entry? Give the clerk the cause number and the precise document name. Say whether you need plain or certified format. A transcript normally comes from the court reporter.
Lavaca Tyler Index Limits
The County Clerk public-access disclaimer says the index is a guide, not the official document. Images can go dark during backups, and searchers are told to try spelling variations. A Lavaca County case search can therefore surface an index entry with no viewable image. It can also miss a name spelled differently. The official interface displays that limitation before entry.

The screen rewards a cautious workflow. Use the index to spot a likely record, then verify it with the County Clerk and request the document when its exact contents matter.
Statewide vs County Case Search
Neither route replaces the other. re:SearchTX is useful for electronic records published by participating Texas courts. Lavaca County sources offer local docket PDFs, clerk contacts, forms, inspection, and certified copies. When the court is uncertain, the statewide view can help. Local service is stronger in some cases. Turn to it for a known case, a recent setting, an old file, or a missing image.
| Point | Statewide | Lavaca County |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Participating published courts | The named local custodian |
| Best key | Name, cause, filing, text, hearing | Court plus exact cause number |
| Copies | Role-based access varies | Plain or certified clerk copies |
| Settings | Hearing view where available | PDF, coordinator, clerk, or notice |
A sensible fallback chain: local PDF, then statewide search, then the clerk by phone or counter, then a focused mailed or written request. An in-person search can resolve ambiguous names. Phone contact can route a request, though it never creates a court filing or a traffic appearance.
No Result Is Not Final
Do not assume a missing entry means a missing case. City matters stay with the municipal courts in Hallettsville, Moulton, Shiner, or Yoakum. Only an appeal opens a new case. Justice court cases sit in their own precincts. District and County Court files rest with separate clerks, so one docket search never covers them all.
- Recheck the court printed on the document.
- Try the full cause number with allowed punctuation.
- Check the local PDF or hearing view.
- Call or visit the proper clerk.
- Submit a written request for the exact record.
The Texas citation and notice search lets you query published notices by name, cause, court, county, status, or wildcard terms. Treat it as a notice index, not a full Lavaca County trial docket.
Access and Restricted Cases
Public access does not put every Lavaca County case image online. Juvenile material and sealed records are common examples. Expunction information, protected personal data, and sensitive filings may also be withheld, redacted, or limited to authorized users. Civil Rule 76a governs sealing, and criminal expunction and nondisclosure rules work differently. A missing result proves neither one way or the other.
The Texas Public Information Act covers many agency records. Case files are different. They fall under court authority and court-record rules instead. The Texas Judicial Branch policy draws that line clearly. Address any motion or judgment request to the clerk holding the case. Skip the county's general open-records channel for those. If you need restricted material, name the case and state your basis for access. Then follow the issuing court's process. Confirm any critical status directly with the originating Lavaca County court.
